Following the Scents
is a garlic-shaped installation which travels from the farmland to the city centre, re-connecting the community by collecting and sharing everyone’s stories on scents from their kitchens.
Since COVID-19, the invisible 1.5-meter distance between people become a “new normal”, along with the visible borders in public spaces. But we depend on each other more than ever.
While we were isolated at home, food takes a more significant part of our everyday life. The scents of different food carry our memories of being together with families and friends, which brings us solace in difficult times. Each piece of such memories is embedded in the scents of a certain spice, herbs, cheese, nuts and fruits, which also tells the story of who we are.
“What does your kitchen smell like? What is your story?” We proposed these questions to the people of Leidsche Rijn, the largest Vinex town in the Netherlands. It is also a town where multi-cultural families settled down but barely know or interact with their neighbours, while large areas of public spaces that have great potential for gathering and exchanging are left underused.
“Follow the Scents” is a scented mobile installation that takes the shape of garlic and its cloves. Following a curated route, the “cloves” start their journey from the farmland in the west of Leidsche Rijn, dispersed and travelling through different pocket gardens of the neighbourhood, and all the way to the community centre of RAUM.
The semi-transparent “cloves” will be finished with different colours of the spices, herbs, cheeses, nuts and fruits, then combined into an installation co-made with the community. Each has a tent-like structure of tensile carbon fibre and a special-designed membrane that help to preserve the scents inside. As a lightweight installation, it can be easily moved to different locations by cargo bikes. Such a flexible system allows future recycling at multiple scales and in various spaces, and enables constant foster of solidarity, care, and social interactions with the local community.
People will also be able to capture the beautiful view of the countryside when walking along the curated route. The subtle scents collected from its diverse communities add another layer to this romantic landscape.
The installation explores and encourages people’s engagement in the making of public spaces, which have been conventionally defined by architecture, landscape and infrastructure. By introducing the sense of smell and the diversity of spices from the mundane into space making, spring onion atelier tries to challenge the boundaries between private life and public life, between senses and spaces as well as objects and emotions. Eventually it helps to enrich the experiences of social life and bring people back to the public space where a better lifestyle of sharing and co-living is incubated.
